SHIATSU THERAPY
Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. Shiatsu literally means finger (tsu) pressure (shia). When the acupressure points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force (sometimes known as qi or chi) to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle, but firm pressure of hands and feet. Acupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eye strain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower backaches, constipation, and indigestion. The healing touch of acupressure reduces tension, increases circulation, and enables the body to relax deeply. By relieving stress, acupressure strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness. Shiatsu utilizes a combination of pressure and assisted-stretching techniques, some of which are common to other therapies, such as Massage, Physiotherapy, Acupressure, Osteopathy, Lymphatic Drainage and others. The treatment stimulates the circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid, releases toxins and deep seated tensions from the muscles, stimulates the hormonal system and the immune system, and acts on the autonomic nervous system.
At Treat we practise Five-Element Shiatsu, which is different from regular shiatsu in that it seeks to enhance the effectiveness of traditional shiatsu by incorporating aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Shiatsu is performed while you are fully dressed. Loose, comfortable clothing, such as yoga or sweat pants and t-shirts are preferred, since we will move you in stretches that require you to be unrestricted by tight-fitting clothes.
A typical Shiatsu session lasts approx. 60 - 90 minutes.

Acupressure points have a high electrical conductivity at the surface of the skin, and thus conduct energy most effectively. The main 12 meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine are the body's healing energy pathways. Shiatsu therapy moves this life energy through the meridians to improve flow and balance. The points are where vital energy gets blocked on the meridians, and where you can most effectively release the resulting tension, numbness, or pain. As healing energy flows through the meridians, it governs blood circulation and harmonizes all functions of the body.
